Man* vs. Machine: A Case Study in Base Noun Phrase Learning

چکیده
A great deal of work has been done demonstrating the ability of machine learning algorithms to automatically extract linguistic knowledge from annotated corpora. Very little work has gone into quantifying the difference in ability at this task between a person and a machine. This paper is a first step in that direction.

Man [and Woman] vs. Machine: A Case Study in Base Noun Phrase Learning
A great deal of work has been done demonstrating the ability of machine learning algorithms to automatically extract linguistic knowledge from annotated corpora. Very little work has gone into quantifying the difference in ability at this task between a person and a machine. This paper is a first step in that direction.
متن کاملRule Writing or Annotation: Cost-efficient Resource Usage for Base Noun Phrase Chunking
This paper presents a comprehensive empirical comparison between two approaches for developing a base noun phrase chunker: human rule writing and active learning using interactive real-time human annotation. Several novel variations on active learning are investigated , and underlying cost models for cross-modal machine learning comparison are presented and explored. Results show that it is mor...
متن کاملPhrase Chunking Using Entropy Guided Transformation Learning
Entropy Guided Transformation Learning (ETL) is a new machine learning strategy that combines the advantages of decision trees (DT) and Transformation Based Learning (TBL). In this work, we apply the ETL framework to four phrase chunking tasks: Portuguese noun phrase chunking, English base noun phrase chunking, English text chunking and Hindi text chunking. In all four tasks, ETL shows better r...
متن کاملApplying System Combination to Base Noun Phrase Identification
We use seven machine learning algorithms for one task: identifying base noun phrases. The results have been processed by different system combination methods and all of these outperformed the best individual result. We have applied the seven learners with the best combinator, a majority vote of the top five systems, to a standard data set and managed to improve the best published result for thi...
متن کاملNoun Phrase Recognition with Tree Patterns
This paper offers a method for the noun phrase recognition of Hungarian natural language texts based on machine learning methods. The approach learns noun phrase tree patterns described by regular expressions from an annotated corpus. The tree patterns are completed with probability values using error statistics. The noun phrase recognition parser tries to find the best-fitting trees for a sent...
